Interview P11 (pseudonym) | SYNTHETIC | Topic: PhD researchers who teach
Participant: PhD student, construction management, second year | INT = interviewer

INT: Thanks for joining. What teaching do you do at the moment?
P11: I tutor on a building technology module and mark the coursework.
INT: How do you feel about the pay and the hours?
P11: Money is tight. I've been in my overdraft since Christmas. The
teaching pays late, a month behind, which adds to the financial
     pressure.
INT: What support do you get from the module leader?
P11: Support is patchy. The module leader changed halfway through the
year and the new one didn't know we existed.
INT: What do you get out of it?
P11: I like bringing real site examples into the classroom. It makes
     me feel useful.
INT: How were you prepared for teaching?
P11: Nothing formal. I was thrown in because someone went on leave,
and I learned on the job.
INT: How does teaching fit with your own research?
P11: I'm part-time and I work in industry as well, so teaching
squeezes the thesis into whatever is left. Some weeks that's
     nothing.
INT: Would you teach again next year?
P11: Maybe. It depends on whether the payments arrive on time.
INT: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
P11: Paying on time would be a start.
INT: Thank you, that's really helpful.
