Interview P08 (pseudonym) | SYNTHETIC | Topic: PhD researchers who teach
Participant: PhD student, interior design, fourth year | INT = interviewer

INT: Thanks for joining. What teaching do you do at the moment?
P08: I do crits in the studio for final-year interior design students.
INT: How were you prepared for teaching?
P08: There was no training for crits at all. I copied my old tutors,
which isn't always a good model.
INT: What do you get out of it?
P08: I've learned so much about giving feedback kindly. The students
trust me, which means a lot.
INT: What support do you get from the module leader?
P08: The module leader is brilliant. She sends a short plan before
each crit and checks in afterwards.
INT: How does teaching fit with your own research?
P08: Crit days are intense. My supervisor has told me to do less,
because my progress review was a bit behind.
INT: How do you feel about the pay and the hours?
P08: We get paid for the crit sessions, but not for reading the
portfolios beforehand. That's hours of unpaid work every week.
INT: Would you teach again next year?
P08: Yes, I'd like to keep doing crits.
INT: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
P08: Pay us for the reading and I'd be very happy.
INT: Thank you, that's really helpful.
