Interview P04 (pseudonym) | SYNTHETIC | Topic: PhD researchers who teach
Participant: PhD student, product design, third year | INT = interviewer

INT: Thanks for joining. What teaching do you do at the moment?
P04: I support workshop sessions in the design technology labs, mostly
     first years.
INT: How were you prepared for teaching?
P04: The safety induction was thorough. The teaching side wasn't
covered at all. I just watched a technician for a few sessions.
INT: How do you feel about the pay and the hours?
P04: I worry about money a lot, especially with rent and bills going
up. The teaching makes the difference between managing and not
     managing.
INT: How does teaching fit with your own research?
P04: It breaks up my week, which isn't always bad, but I lose
momentum. By the time I get back to my chapter I've forgotten
     where I was.
INT: What do you get out of it?
P04: When a student makes something that works for the first time,
     that's a great feeling. I've started thinking I might want a
     lecturing job after all.
INT: What support do you get from the module leader?
P04: Very good this year. The module leader meets us before each block
     and asks what's working.
INT: Would you teach again next year?
P04: Definitely. It's the part of the PhD I enjoy most.
INT: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
P04: No, I think that covers it.
INT: Thank you, that's really helpful.
