Interview P02 (pseudonym) | SYNTHETIC | Topic: PhD researchers who teach
Participant: PhD student, architecture, second year | INT = interviewer

INT: Thanks for joining. What teaching do you do at the moment?
P02: I help in the design studio on Tuesdays, giving feedback on the
     second years' projects.
INT: What do you get out of it?
P02: Explaining a design choice out loud makes me think about my own
work. And the students are funny. I look forward to it.
INT: How were you prepared for teaching?
P02: I was thrown in, really. I got an email the week before term with
the timetable and that was it. I've never had any training on
     giving feedback.
INT: What support do you get from the module leader?
P02: It depends who's leading the studio. Last year it was very
organised. This year the brief changed twice and we found out
     from the students.
INT: How do you feel about the pay and the hours?
P02: The cost of living is the big thing for me. Everything costs more
than it did when I started, and the teaching is the only reason I
     can stay in the city.
INT: How does teaching fit with your own research?
P02: Studio days are long, and I'm wiped out afterwards. I've stopped
trying to do any writing on a Tuesday. I write on the other days
     instead.
INT: Would you teach again next year?
P02: Probably. I'd want to know the brief before term starts, though.
INT: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
P02: I'd like more training, but paid training, in the working day.
INT: Thank you, that's really helpful.
